Course Overview

Human Resource Management practices influence employee skills through the acquisition and development of a firm’s human capital. Recruiting procedures that provide a large pool of qualified applicants, paired with a reliable and valid selection regimen, will have a substantial influence over the quality and type of skills new employees possess. Providing formal and informal training experiences, such as basic skills training, on-the-job experience, coaching, mentoring, and management development can further influence employees’ development.

The effectiveness of highly skilled employees will be limited if they are not motivated to perform, however, the HRM skills that we offer can affect employee motivation by encouraging them to work both harder and smarter. In achieving that, as an institution, we lay emphasis on motivating employee behavior through the use of performance appraisals, linking the appraisals tightly with incentive compensation systems, and use of internal promotion systems that focus on employee merit. Others include comprehensive employee recruitment and selection procedures, incentive compensation and performance management systems, extensive employee involvement and training , improve the knowledge, skills and abilities of a firm’s current and potential employees, increase their motivation, reduce shirking, and enhance retention of quality employees while encouraging nonperformers to leave the firm.

This Diploma will introduce learners to a field of human resource management – and its growing importance to the success of the organization’s overall performance and success. The course introduces students to the theories, ideas, controversies and challenges involved in managing human resources in contemporary work organizations. The course also focuses on the link between an organization’s overall business strategies and an organization’s HR strategies, policies and practices.
